University of Otago Overview

The University of Otago, established in 1869, is the oldest university in New Zealand, renowned for its strong reputation in research and high-quality education, particularly in Medicine and Dentistry. It is the only university in New Zealand that offers dentistry courses and one of only two universities in the country to offer medicine courses. 

Located in the vibrant city of Dunedin, the University of Otago provides a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate programs across various disciplines. The university boasts approximately 20,000 students annually, including 3,000 international students.

Entry Requirements

English Language Proficiency Requirement:

  • For undergraduate programs, you are required to have at least an IELTS overall score of 6.0 (or equivalent) with no band score under 5.5.
  • For postgraduate programs, you are required to have at least an IELTS overall score of 6.5 (or equivalent) with no band score under 6.0.

Academic Requirement:

  • To enrol in Bachelor programs, you are required to have completed High School qualifications in New Zealand or your home country. The minimum grade required will depend on each study program.
  • To enrol in Taught Maters programs, you need to have completed a bachelor degree or postgraduate diploma from New Zealand or an acceptable equivalent oversea qualification.  
  • To enrol in Research Maters programs, you must have completed a bachelor honours degree or postgraduate diploma from New Zealand or an acceptable equivalent overseas qualification. 

Tuition Fee for International Students

The tuition fees vary, depending on the courses and the level of study that you are applying for. 

  • Health Sciences:  From NZ$41,000 – NZ$50,000 per year 
  • For some special subjects (Medicine and Dentistry): The tuition fee can be up to NZ$92,000 – NZ$117,000 per year from Year 2 of study.  
  • Humanity Study Areas: From NZ$35,621- NZ$ 41,952 per year 
  • Science Study Areas: From NZ$41,595 – NZ$ 44,289 
  • Business Study Areas: From NZ$38,279 – NZ$ $44,720

Scholarships for International Students

University of Otago Global Scholarships

University of Otago Global Scholarships, valued at up to NZ$15,000, is designed to support international students from China, Indonesia, India, Malaysia, Singapore, South Korea, Thailand and Vietnam. This scholarship will be assessed based on academic records and you must enroll in University of Otago as a full-time student to be qualified for this scholarship.  

Vice-Chancellor's Scholarships for International Students

Vice-Chancellor’s Scholarships for International Students, valued at up to NZ$10,000, is designed to recognise high achieving international students who enrol full-time in a program at University of Otago. This scholarship will be assessed based on academic potential and is for students studying on campus only.  

University of Otago International Partnership Scholarship

University of Otago International Partnership Scholarship is designed to support international students who are applying to partnership study programs between University of Otago and its recognised partners (e.g., 2+2, credit recognition). The scholarship has a value of up to NZ$10,000 and the students must undertake their study at University of Otago for at least four semesters to be eligible for this scholarship.  

University of Otago Coursework Master's Scholarship

University of Otago Coursework Master’s Scholarship, valued up to NZ$10,000, is designed to support international students who will undertake a coursework master’s degree (except for MBA program) at University of Otago. The applicants’ academic record will be taken into account when the scholarship committee selects the right awardees for this scholarship.
