International Merit Scholarship

About the Scholarship

The Queensland University of Technology (QUT) International Merit Scholarship is a high-achievement scholarship for outstanding international students commencing undergraduate or postgraduate coursework programs at QUT. This scholarship is designed to reward academic excellence and provide financial assistance to students who demonstrate outstanding academic performance.

In addition to financial support, recipients may gain access to extra development opportunities, including leadership training and networking events.

Scholarship Benefits

Recipients will receive either:

  1. A 25% tuition fee reduction for the first two semesters (one year) of study, provided they meet the minimum academic standards.
    • Available for students from all faculties.
  2. An ongoing 25% tuition fee reduction for each semester of study, provided students meet the required academic conditions.
    • Available for eligible courses from the following faculties:
      • Faculty of Business and Law
      • Faculty of Creative Industries, Education and Social Justice
      • Faculty of Engineering
      • Faculty of Science
    • Not available for courses in the Faculty of Health.

Additional benefits may include membership to the QUT College of Excellence, providing access to networking and professional development opportunities.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for the QUT International Merit Scholarship, applicants must:

  • Be an international student.
  • Meet the academic entry requirements for their chosen program.
  • Meet the minimum English language proficiency requirements.
    • If applicants complete a QUT pathway program to meet the English language requirements, they may still be considered for the scholarship upon commencing their degree.
  • Receive an admission offer letter into an eligible course from a participating faculty.
  • Not be receiving another QUT academic scholarship.

Note:

  • The scholarship is not available for students who are returning to their previous QUT course after a break.
  • This scholarship is not based on financial need—only academic performance is considered.

Academic Requirements

Undergraduate Degrees & Vertical Masters

QUT assesses the highest qualification obtained when determining eligibility. The table below shows the minimum academic standards required for different high school qualifications:

Postgraduate Degrees

For students applying to a postgraduate coursework program, the minimum required GPA is:

Partially completed Australian postgraduate study (0.50 year full-time or more) GPA 5.00 on a 7-point scale

Equivalent grading scales apply to qualifications from other countries.

How to Apply

No separate scholarship application is required.

  • All new international students applying to study at QUT will automatically be considered for the International Merit Scholarship based on their academic results.
  • If eligible, students will receive a scholarship offer along with their admission offer letter.

What happens next?

  • If students believe they qualify for the scholarship but did not receive an offer, they can request a review:
    • If applying via an agent, the agent should request a review.
    • If applying directly, students should reply to their QUT offer email with a request for a scholarship review.
    • A review request must include a statement explaining why they believe they qualify and supporting documentation.

Application Deadline

  • No separate deadline—students are automatically considered when applying for admission.
  • It is recommended that students apply as early as possible to allow sufficient time for processing.

QUT Excellence Scholarship

About the Scholarship

 

The QUT Excellence Scholarship (Academic) is Queensland University of Technology’s premier award, designed to recognize and support students demonstrating outstanding academic achievement. Each year, QUT offers more than 130 of these scholarships, collectively valued at over $3.5 million.

Scholarship Value and Duration

The scholarships are available in two tiers:

  • $30,000 Scholarships: Recipients receive up to $5,000 per semester, totaling $10,000 per year, for a maximum of three years.
  • $10,000 Scholarships: Recipients receive $2,500 per semester, totaling $5,000 per year, for the first two years of study.

Payments are made after the HECS-HELP census date each semester.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for the QUT Excellence Scholarship (Academic), applicants must:

  • Be an Australian or New Zealand citizen, permanent resident, holder of a permanent humanitarian visa, or an international student who has completed the Australian Year 12 curriculum, either in Australia or overseas.
  • Be commencing university for the first time in 2025.
  • Have graduated Year 12 in 2024, or in 2023 with no more than one gap year since graduation.
  • Achieve a minimum unadjusted Australian Tertiary Admissions Rank (ATAR) of 98.00 or equivalent.
  • List a QUT undergraduate course as their first preference in their QTAC application during the main December and January offer rounds.
  • Receive an offer from QUT for their first preference course.

Note: Meeting the minimum ATAR requirement does not guarantee a scholarship offer, as the process is competitive.

Application Process

No separate scholarship application is required. All eligible students who submit a QTAC application with a QUT course as their first preference will be automatically considered. It’s important to adhere to QTAC key dates to ensure eligibility.

Additional Benefits

Recipients of the QUT Excellence Scholarship (Academic) will:

  • Gain automatic membership into QUT’s College of Excellence, providing access to a network of high-achieving peers and additional development opportunities.
  • Have opportunities for early access to research projects.

In alignment with QUT’s commitment to supporting Women in STEM, at least 50% of the Excellence Scholarships in STEM fields will be awarded to eligible female students.

Conditions for Scholarship Continuation

To maintain the scholarship, recipients must:

  • Achieve an overall Grade Point Average (GPA) of 5.00 or higher each semester.
  • Remain enrolled either full-time or part-time.
  • If considering a leave of absence, complete at least one full-time semester before taking up to two years off. Scholarship payments will be paused during this period.
  • If deferring their course, recipients can also defer the scholarship, provided they haven’t undertaken other university studies during the deferment period.

Recipients are not permitted to:

  • Defer their offer and undertake alternative university studies elsewhere.

Important Dates

  • Scholarship Offers: Will be made between December 2024 and January 2025.

Due to the high volume of applications, only successful candidates will be notified. Appeals for unsuccessful applications will not be considered.

QUT Real World International Scholarship

About the Scholarship

 

The QUT Real World International Scholarship is designed to recognize and support high-achieving international students commencing their studies at Queensland University of Technology (QUT). This scholarship offers financial assistance and additional benefits to enhance the academic journey of recipients.

Scholarship Value

Recipients will receive:

  • Tuition Fee Coverage: A 20% reduction in tuition fees for the first two semesters (one year) of degree or higher study at QUT, provided minimum academic standards are maintained.
  • Additional Benefits: Invitation to a scholarship award ceremony and potential access to further development opportunities.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for this scholarship, applicants must:

  • Citizenship: Be an international student.
  • Academic Requirements: Meet the academic entry requirements for the chosen course.
  • English Proficiency: Satisfy the minimum English language entry requirements for the course.
  • Course Enrollment: Be commencing the course for the first time.
  • Admission Offer: Receive an admission offer letter for an eligible course from one of the participating faculties:
    • Faculty of Business and Law
    • Faculty of Creative Industries, Education and Social Justice
    • Faculty of Engineering
    • Faculty of Science

Eligibility is solely determined based on academic performance; other factors such as educational disruption, medical circumstances, or financial need are not considered.

Minimum Academic Standards

Application Process

No separate scholarship application is required. QUT will assess the academic qualifications provided during the course application process. Eligible students will be notified of their scholarship offer along with their admission offer letter. To ensure consideration, applicants should include official overall grade point average and grading scale information as issued by their awarding institution(s) in their application.

Conditions

To retain the scholarship, recipients must:

  • Academic Progress: Maintain satisfactory academic progress throughout the course.
  • Leave of Absence: Recipients may take a QUT-approved leave of absence after completing one semester of study. Scholarship payments will be paused during this period and may resume upon return, provided all other terms and conditions are met.

Recipients are not permitted to:

  • Additional Funding: Hold a sponsorship or scholarship from another organisation or government.

  • Residency Status Change: Retain the scholarship if they obtain Australian permanent resident status or become an Australian and/or New Zealand citizen.

QUT College Merit Scholarship

About the Scholarship

The QUT College Merit Scholarship is designed to support future international students enrolling in diploma and foundation programs at QUT College. This scholarship recognizes academic achievement and commitment to future studies.

Scholarship Value
Recipients will receive a scholarship covering 25% of their first semester tuition fee for either:

  • A foundation program
  • A diploma program

Eligibility Criteria

Eligibility is based on academic performance and varies depending on the applicant’s qualifications:

  1. For Applicants with an Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR):
    • Completed ATAR within Australia or overseas, achieving a minimum ATAR of 68.00.
    • Meet all course entry requirements and have received a QUT offer letter for one of the following courses:
      • Diploma in Architectural Studies
      • Diploma in Business
      • Diploma in Creative Industries
      • Diploma in Engineering
      • Diploma in Health Science
      • Diploma in Information Technology
  2. For Applicants with Overseas Qualifications:
    • Meet all course entry requirements and have received a QUT offer letter for one of the following courses:

Equity Scholarship Scheme

About the scholarship  

Open to all eligible current and future QUT students, the QUT Equity Scholarships Scheme offers more than $4 million worth of scholarships, bursaries and computers to low-income students each year. 

What you will receive  

International students could receive either: 

  • an Equity Bursary of $1,500 for one semester 
  • an Equity computer (with the capacity to access internet). You can only receive an Equity computer every third year (i.e. if you received one in 2021 or in 2022, you can’t receive one in 2023). 

Eligibility 

To be eligible, in addition to being a current or future domestic or international student undertaking an undergraduate, postgraduate or research qualification, you must be:

  • from a low-income household 
  • experiencing financial hardship 

Personal hardship will also be taken into consideration when assessing applications. Examples of these include: 

  • personal medical conditions 
  • disabilities 
  • dependents with special needs. 

QUT Research Scholarship

About this scholarship  

There are a variety of scholarships for research programs that you can apply for at any time throughout the year and some that can only be applied for during our annual scholarship round. Typically, scholarships are only available for students who can commit to full time, internal enrolment. 

  • The QUT research scholarship usually covers all the costs for you to study in Australia, which includes tuition fee, living allowance and health insurance (OSHC).  
  • These scholarships are usually available for post graduate level (master by research and PhD programs)  

Eligibility and Application Process

You’ll need to show that you are prepared for research studies. You can do this by providing evidence of: 

  • your research experience (journal article, conference, creative work, etc.)  
  • your university degree, completed no more than 10 years ago 
  • English language requirements: Normally, you are required to obtain an IELTS 6.5 with no band score under 6.0. 
  • your supervisor: Not all academics at QUT are available to supervise research students, so contact your preferred potential supervisor early to check their availability. You’ll need your proposed supervisor’s written support before you can submit your expression of interest. 
  • your research proposal: It is a key requirement of your application. Writing a research proposal is an essential step in defining and conveying your research interests and goals. Once you have your proposed supervisor’s written agreement to support your project, work with them to develop your research proposal.

  • When to apply? The scholarship application date is from 1/May/2023 – 31/July/2023  
  • Outcomes: You will receive the scholarship outcomes from 30/Nov/2023
